Providence, R.I. – November 6, 2026 – Rhode Island Commerce today announced a new application round for its Placemaking Initiative. Placemaking is a statewide economic development initiative that provides grants to transform public spaces through arts and culture investments that boost foot traffic, attract visitors, and support local businesses, especially those in the hospitality and tourism sectors. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, December 2, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
“Rhode Island’s culture and experiences are part of what makes our state a great place to live, work, and visit,” said Governor McKee. “Through the Placemaking Initiative, we’re proud to support local efforts that bring new life to public spaces, celebrate what makes each community unique, and create places where Rhode Islanders and visitors can come together.”
“Investments in placemaking help communities turn local assets into destinations, inviting people to discover some of our marvelous places and spaces – and to support our amazing local businesses,” said Secretary of Commerce Stefan Pryor. “Commerce looks forward to advancing projects that foster economic vibrancy across Rhode Island cities and towns as well as economic growth statewide."
Eligible projects include event programming, art installations, capital improvements, and infrastructure investments that create destination spots across Rhode Island. Awards will be issued between $5,000-$100,000, with priority given to applications demonstrating matching funds.
Examples of previous Placemaking awards include:
- City of Central Falls | Restoration of Cogswell Tower
- City of Cranston | ADA accessible gazebo in Knightsville Park
